IHRDC’s Business Essentials library of e-Learning courses is designed to improve the critical business skills of those working in the oil and gas industry, and we are always on the lookout for fresh topics that seem topical and timely.
This new series we have added is designed for human resources professionals charged with supporting the success of their organization in ways that are ethically and socially responsible. The series is called HR Ethics and starts with the assumption that HR professionals must consider what is right and fair in their organization’s decision-making processes.
After all, the people in HR are typically involved in designing and enforcing policies that govern the people working in an organization, so they play a powerful role in shaping an ethical corporate culture. The 10 titles in the new HR Ethics series reflect that assumption, with examples such as “Ethical Decision Making,” “Building an Ethical Organization,” and “Common Ethical Challenges.” Each of the 90-minute courses explores the relationship between human resource management and creating an ethical workplace – one that is rules based and fair.
Some segments focus on theoretical and philosophical questions about the awareness of right and wrong, while others focus on the practical implementation of a set of ethical standards in shaping a corporate culture. They address the ethical dilemmas confronting those in business faced with the fundamental question: “What’s the right thing to do?”But the “right” thing is often difficult to determine in a competitive business environment.
Should a business focus on following the rules or on the effects a decision will have? Can self-interest play a role in making an ethical decision? Why do ethical people commit unethical acts? How do you decide on the best course of action when no clear path is apparent? These are the sorts of questions explored in the new HR Ethics series, which makes the courses critically important for HR professionals tasked with setting the standards for recruiting, staffing, governing, and evaluating a workforce that needs guidance to succeed.
